A 32-BORE MATCHLOCK SINGLE-SHOT MUSKET, UNSIGNED, TYPE 'TANEGASHIMA', no visible serial number,
Japanese, circa 1850, with carved, tapering octagonal 39in. iron barrel, swollen faceted 'urn' muzzle with applied contrasting panels of white-metal, carved blade fore-sight, raised groove fixed rear-sight, the barrel inlaid at breech with an oriental dragon frolicking in clouds, brass swinging pan-cover, plain elongated border decorated brass lockplate with large external brass mainspring, hand-cocked serpentine, maple wood full-stock of classic form (some age splitting) with applied and inlaid carved and engraved brass panels to breech and butt and further panels of white-metal, some geometric, some floral, stylised carved and engraved panel of rolling clouds or smoke to comb and underside of fore-end, two pierced and escutcheoned match-holder apertures, ball trigger and plain brass wire guard, naturalistic brass barrel band approximately halfway along fore-end, four take-down cross-pins with floral escutcheons and provision for under-barrel ramrod (missing)
